Star Trek: Into Darkness: Thursday, May 16 2013

Having experienced The Iron Man at the Imax cineplex, there was only one place to view the opening of Star Trek into Darkness: right in the middle of row K, which is right in the middle of the huge screen. It was fantastic.

I loved the TV Star Trek, right from the first installment; each one of the different TV versions; just everything about Star Trek. I've enjoyed all the films, especially the first one of this series about the younger crew of The Enterprise, set chronologically before the very first TV series with William Shatner as Captain Kirk. I was looking forward to experiencing this latest one, but it blew me away. It is such a wonderful experience. We were there for the very first showing, and the cineplex was packed.

I love Captain Kirk and his pragmatic approach to life. Do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, is his credo, and I share his attitude. Spock is possibly my most favourite character: I like his control of his fierce emotions, and his rational approach to life. Scotty, with his just get it done approach to cherishing the engines of the Enterprise, is another favourite. Gene Roddenberry was a genius to create such a future world.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, the action-packed the film kept me mesmerized from start to finish. With Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison (Khan) the villain, Karl Urban as Doctor Leonard "Bones" McCoy, and Simon Pegg as Scotty, the cast is so well chosen and each so perfect for the part, it is a delight to watch them in action. And action there is. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and can't wait for the sequel, which has been carefully set up, I was delighted to note.
