Winter's Tale: Monday, February 24 2014

Winter's Tale is based on the novel of the same name, by Mark Helprin, published in 1983. The screenplay is written by Akiva Goldman, who directs the film. It's a supernatural drama, and stars Colin Farrell as Peter Lake, and Jessica Brown Findlay as Beverly Penn. Jessica Brown Findlay is best known as Lady Sybil Crawley in ITV's Downton Abbey, but plays this part quite differently.

Richard Crow and Will Smith, add to the cast, as does William Hurt. The acting is a delight, as one would expect. The cinematography is wonderfully in keeping with the story, the direction is good, and the music mellow.

The story is fantasy, full of symbolism and mythical figures, such as the flying white horse for the hero, and the magnificent black horse for the anti-hero, Russell Crowe. The theme of true love, and miracles, adds to the tale. I enjoyed Will Smith as Lucifer.

Rosemary's comment was that the film is beautiful, and Carolyn and I agreed. Carolyn says she, "isn't into fantasy", but enjoyed Winter's Tale nevertheless. Apparently, the film isn't getting good reviews, but we enjoyed it. We had been taken on an escapist adventure, and felt like children who had been told a lovely fairy tale.
