86th Oscars: Sunday, March 2 2014

Ellen DeGeneres played host to these Oscars, the 86th Academy Awards, with such a pleasant, light-hearted touch, it set a perfect tone for the show. She is a talk show host and a comedian, and her expertise showed.

The awards were all pretty predictable, with Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) winning Best Actress. Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) winning Best Actor. It would have been a great surprise if 12 Years a Slave hadn't won Best Picture.

At first it looked as if the show would be run on a tight rein, but this hope proved to be unrealistic. We sat up until 12:30 am Eastern Time, three hours from when the Oscars began. A long time!

Obviously, the recipients of the Oscars don't realize how boring it is for everyone else to have to listen to a long list of names of people we don't know. Someone ought to tell them!
