The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: Monday, March 9 2015
This film is one that is perfect to see, as I did, on a cold day, with snow and a howling north wind outside. It's the equivalent of comfort food. Magnificently coloured, not taxing on the brain, undemanding, glimpses of India, a touch of Bollywood, and allowing it's audience to enjoy the fun performances of all those fabulous actors, it's a frothy concoction.
The cast is incredible: Judi Dench as Evelyn Greenslade; Maggie Smith as Muriel Donnelly; Bill Nighy as Douglas Ainslie; Celia Imrie as Madge Harcastle; Penelope Wilson as Jean Ainslie; Ronald Pickup as Norman Cousins; Diana Hardcastle as Carol Parr; Tina Desai as Dunaina; Dev Patel as Sonny Kapoor; Lillete Dubey as Mrs. Kapoor; Richard Gere as Guy Chambers; David Strathairn as Ty Burley; and Tamsin Greig as Lavinia Beach. You can see what a delight it is to watch these actors romp through their parts. Maggie Smith alone would make the film worth seeing.
Is it as good as the first Exotic Marigold Hotel? Some people say no, others say yes. Does that even matter? Maureen and I enjoyed it.
