Nine Parts of Desire: Geraldine Brooks
In this book, Nine Parts of Desire, Geraldine Brooks seeks to understand the women of Islam in their culture and their beliefs. Like so many western women, she finds it difficult to believe that any woman would adhere to Islam and its attitudes towards the position of women in the Muslim societies.
Published in 1995, written by Brooks, a prize-winning foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, this book is a fascinating insight into the lives of women in Muslim societies.
It would appear that much as many Muslim women try to change their societies by pointing out Muhammad actually has improved the lives of women in his time by his revelations, this falls on deaf male ears.
