Black Mass is an American crime film based on the book, Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance between the FBI and the Irish Mob, written by Dick Lahr and Gerald O'Neill. As the title of the book makes clear, this is not a pleasant film. On the other hand, it is a gripping story, well directed by Scott Cooper. My friends and I enjoyed it.
Johnny Depp plays mobster James "Whitey" Bulger and is electrifying in the part. Not only is he totally unrecognizable, he is also totally evil. He really is an incredible actor! Oscar-worthy is the only word for this performance. It's a "must see".
Benedict Cumberbatch plays the brother of James, and delivers his usual, credible performance. The part is too small for him, but, hey, it brings in the money and pays the bills. The rest of the cast is excellent, and probably were chosen to ensure that this film is a shoo-in for the Oscars.
If you like to see the Oscar films before the show, this will definitely be a "not to be missed".
