The Right and the Left: Generalizations

The Left says the Right has no heart; the Right says the Left has no brain.
The Right says the Left has no brain; the Left says the Right has no heart.

The Right 
  1. Understand that America is based on tradition and its history
  2. Accept and love the world as it is; plan, organize, and work to make it better
  3. Love life as it is, because it works for them, when they work at it
  4. Have faith in the abilities of human beings, because they have faith in themselves
  5. Choose to be happy
  6. Choose to be in control of their lives
  7. Upper class: economically better off; business owners; managers, workers
  8. Understand that money is created by hard work of businesses producing and selling goods
  9. Understand that new productive jobs are created by productive businesses
  10. Self-identify with the upper classes
  11. Self-identify with owners and management
  12. Like order, organization, clear rules, and uniforms
  13. Like strong, socially-recognized, moral system governing actions
  14. Believe in individual responsibility
  15. Believe that society can manage itself
  16. Like less government control over industry and private lives
  17. Like private, sometimes religious, charities supporting social services
  18. Like children educated in an orderly, well-organized environment, with uniforms
  19. Like to help people back on feet so that they can help themselves
  20. Believe in individual responsibility
  21. Believe in strong provincial and local governments, and Federal powers limited
  22. Believe individual rights and civil liberties are paramount
  23. Believe that market forces governing services makes them more efficient
  24. Believe government is about defense of the country and making civil law
  25. Believe taxpayers money is hard earned and to be carefully looked after
  26. Believe in strong military defense
  27. Believe war is inevitable and it is necessary to be prepared
  28. Believe soldiers have to be fighters to win war
  29. Believe a strong world power has an obligation to help its allies in war, etc.
  30. Believe in the rights of individuals to defend themselves with guns
  31. Believe in controlled immigration according to available job requirements
  32. Believe in private ownership of property
  33. Believe Capitalism provides new wealth and more jobs for everyone
  34. Believe Unions are controlled by greedy workers
  35. Believe the Law is for the protection of society and its traditions
  36. Believe in keeping criminals off the street, and away from society
  37. Believe politicians ought to be specially qualified people
  38. Believe in a meritocracy
  39. Believe in protecting the environment, but not at the expense of the economy
  40. Believe in equality of opportunity
  41. Believe in objective Justice
  42. Believe in respect for all


The Left
  1. Their view of America is based on abstract human rights
  2. Hate the world as it is, and want revolution to change it
  3. Want to build Utopia: idealists; often young people; women; academics; politicians; media
  4. Have no faith in the abilities of human beings to improve themselves
  5. Choose to be unhappy and think they have to be do-gooders
  6. Lower class; economically less well off; workers
  7. Think the government produces new money, not just recycles it 
  8. Thinks the government can print money, without this debasing the currency
  9. Self-identify with the lower classes
  10. Self-identify as a worker
  11. Like less order, less organization, less rules, and no uniforms
  12. Like no moral system governing actions
  13. Don't believe in individual responsibility
  14. Like more government interference in industry and private lives
  15. Believe in social engineering
  16. Like separation of Church and State, especially over social services
  17. Like children educated in not too orderly or controlled environment
  18. Like to have people depend on them, or government
  19. Don't believe in individual responsibility for their lives
  20. Believe in strong, central, Federal government
  21. Believe the individual has no control over personal life 
  22. Believe rights of society come before those of the individual
  23. Believe government ought to tax the rich heavily to provide services
  24. Believe government is about making life better for everyone
  25. Believe money grows on trees and government can run up huge debt
  26. Believe strong military defense is a waste of money
  27. Believe was is not inevitable and differences can be settled by diplomacy
  28. Believe soldiers ought to be peacekeepers, not fighters
  29. Believe a strong world power ought to fight only if directly attacked
  30. Believe the individual has no right to self protections with their own guns
  31. Believe in no control over immigration, untied to available job requirements
  32. Believe in communal control of property
  33. Believe Capitalism is controlled by greedy business people
  34. Believe Unions gain higher wages, benefits, and fewer working hours
  35. Believe the Law is for the protection of citizens
  36. Believe criminals can be rehabilitated
  37. Believe politicians do not need to be specially qualified, experienced people
  38. Believe in affirmative action, and minorities protection
  39. Believe in protecting the environment, even at the expense of the economy
  40. Believe in equality of outcome
  41. Believe in relative Justice
  42. Believe in dignity and rights of all
Centralists
  1. May be centre-Left of centre-Right
  2. Pragmatists, not idealists of ideologists
  3. Perhaps not a member of any Party
  4. Beliefs may be mixed between Left and Right
  5. Moderate in outlook
  6. Open to ideas from others
  7. Can see both sides of all issues
  8. Can see the strengths of each side
  9. Believe in coming together to take the best of both sides
  10. Believe in a civil society that behaves with dignity 
Tragedy of Modern Politics
  1. People are labelled as being of one party or the other
  2. People want to idolize their leaders
  3. People don't want to discuss issues rationally
  4. People are swayed by emotion, often stirred up by politicians and the media
  5. People don't want facts, or factual discussion
  6. People love to hate the other side
  7. People don't respect others
  8. People lie about the other side
